Social Survival Skills

A multidisciplinary group intervention for adolescents who are motivated to improve their competence (and confidence!) in navigating the complexities of the teen social world.

Learning objectives:

  • Developing & maintaining friendships

  • Conversational skills

  • Entering & exiting group conversations

  • Appropriate use of humor

  • Electronic communication

  • Being a good sport

  • Organizing get-togethers

  • Handling teasing & bullying

  • Handling disagreements

  • Changing a reputation

Group learning format:

Each weekly session will run for 90 minutes for a total of 16 sessions. Through didactic instruction, role-play demonstrations, and feedback from trained professionals, participants will be taught important social skills that build upon each other. The curriculum for the workshop is based on the evidenced-based social skills intervention PEERS® (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills). Instructional materials and handouts have been modified to include visual illustrations to enhance learning. Participants will practice targeted skills during socialization activities within the sessions.

To further promote generalization of targeted skills across different social settings, participants will vote on social outings in close proximity to the clinic location at appropriate times during the curriculum. Parents (or other support persons) are encouraged to attend the last 15 minutes of each session when weekly homework assignments are given in order to learn how best to coach the participant between sessions. Homework assignments are geared toward providing additional opportunities to practice targeted skills and to expand the adolescent’s social network.

  • Participants must be 12 to 17 years of age

  • Participants must be in middle or high school

  • Participants must have difficulty navigating social situations

  • Participants must be interested in attending the program

  • Participants must agree to participate voluntarily

  • Participants must consistently attend the program

Enrollment is limited. Requirements for participation include:

Enrollment:

Please fill out this form to begin the enrollment process. You then will be contacted by a member of our team to set up a 15-minute phone screen and subsequently receive an intake packet to complete and return. Prior to the group start date, the participant will be asked to attend a 1.5 hour intake appointment with one of our clinicians. Having a complete profile for each participant enables us to provide more effective intervention and track the progress of each individual in the program. The intake appointment also allows both the participant and parent to learn more about the program and address remaining questions. The entire cost of the workshop is $1750 ($150 intake/assessment + $100 per 90-minute session). The specific weekday and time for meetings will be determined based on majority availability. Please include any questions related to billing and/or scheduling when filling out the enrollment form. The primary meeting location for this group is at Get Set Therapy, LLC.
